This project showcases a visual development exploration centered around a 17th-century pirate adventure, which includes detailed character and environment designs that bring to life the thrilling escapades of pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy. Drawing unconventional inspiration from the dynamic personas of baristas at a local coffee shop, it aims to capture the essence of maritime lore, combining historical accuracy with imaginative creativity.
I worked as a Visual Developer on
• Plotted the entire story
• Designed the 4 characters through multiple rounds of ideations, sketches and pirate history research
• Conceptualized two major environments: Tortuga Pirate Island and The Eight Gallons tavern
• Designed The Ghost Hunter, a pirate ship based on historical accuracy and narrative integration
My work encompasses story creation, character and environment design, offering a comprehensive visual development package for this 17th-century pirate adventure
Pray, lend thine ear to tales of yore, of a time known widely as the Golden Age of Piracy, spanning the years from 1650 to 1730. The legends of pirates that thou art about to delve into occurred during this glorious epoch, which met its demise with the decline of the Spanish Empire.
In the year of our Lord 1647, upon the mystic shores of the Americas in the Atlantic, sailed a pirate ship, the sight of which would strike terror into the hearts of coastal villagers of Spain and England alike. This vessel was immortalized in the ballads of wandering minstrels, described to appear ghost-like upon the horizon as tempests raged. It preyed upon merchant ships, plundering their goods, mercilessly slaughtering the innocent tradesmen and crew aboard, before vanishing into the misty embrace of the sea.
The mere mention of the "Ghost Hunter" would send shivers down the spines of villagers and merchants, causing them to break into a cold sweat. The name "Ghost Hunter" became synonymous with the Grim Reaper in their hearts, for an encounter with this ship was an omen of death, marking the end of one's earthly journey.
